‘PARTI-cipation X - Ocupar a Cidade’, Prato Riverside, Lisbon, Portugal, 2024
The project ‘Life on Mars - Slana Camp’ had its first appearance in Lisbon at a group exhibition and is now being continued in Poland. The idea to make the topic public was born during a stay on the island of Pag, when I accidentally discovered that there used to be a concentration camp on the site. As there is no mention of this fact on the site of the former camp, I started to research the few source publications that confirmed this.
The Ustaša regime sought to create a „pure” Croatian state by implementing a campaign of ethnic cleansing, targeting Serbs, Jews, Roma, and political dissidents.
This repression environment set the stage for the establishment of concentration camps throughout the territory.
Life in Slana was marked by extreme deprivation. The Ustaša guards employed brutal methods, including physical violence, psychological torture, and executions. Detainees were forced to perform hard labor in grueling conditions, with many succumbing to exhaustion, disease, or execution. Currently, there is no marking or mention to these tragic events on the site of the former camp. Instead, hiking trails have been created through the camp site.
