In Four Walls

Lodz Biennale, Lodz, Poland, 2010

Part of the Lodz Biennale “In Four Walls” took place in a typical pre-war tenement house in Łódź. Its bourgeois charekter was supposed to include works made with a scanner, which were supposed to recall the technique of ‘monidło’ and ‘landszaft’, often decorating apartments in the old days. My work consisting of four photographs referred to the poetics of the monidło. Fragments of human bodies were scanned and then joined together. The scanner’s light does not reach more than a few centimeters. In this way, human bodies have lost the perspective in which we usually see them, each fragment has become just as important. In this way, “photographed” bodies emerge from the dark as if from a thick liquid.
