Burning Circle

Negev Desert, Israel, 1996
cotton refuse, fire, diameter 60 m

Participating in the event ‘Co-existance’ I stood up in front of a dilemma of facing the power of the nature of the Negev Desert. I wanted to refer to the complicated political situation in the country but also to avoid a ‘journalistic effect’. My aim was to create work, which would be open to interpretations and yet to a certain extent refer to the current inflamed situation in the Middle East. The result was a blazing circle in a size of about 60 meters in diameter. Alighted circle was build from cotton waste situated on the line sun - moon. The fire was set in the moment of the sunset in the symbolic gesture of keeping suns rays up while it was falling in the dusk. The work in collaboration with Lexy Funk.
